Staffing Shortages and Inadequate Safety Training Heighten Risks for Company Drivers

Thursday, May 16th, 2024 Source: Nationwide

Recent research by Nationwide reveals significant safety concerns among company drivers, largely driven by staffing shortages and insufficient safety training. According to the study, nearly three-quarters of company drivers are seeking more training to enhance safety and reduce accident risks. The research indicates that one-third of drivers frequently feel distracted while driving, with common distractions including GPS operation, music system interactions, and responding to work-related texts. Additionally, 27% of drivers admit to daydreaming, and 13% check social media while on the road.

Staffing shortages appear to exacerbate these risks, as 40% of drivers report their employers struggling with workforce gaps. This has led to increased workloads, longer hours, and tighter deadlines, further distracting drivers. Drivers are also engaging in risky behaviors due to work demands, such as taking work phone calls (55%) and reading/responding to work texts (30%) while driving.

These shortages and distractions are impacting workplace standards and driver safety, with many drivers reporting reduced hiring criteria, decreased focus on safety, and insufficient training. Consequently, 60% of drivers express concern for their safety and liability, with over half witnessing or being involved in accidents in the past year. To address these issues, 72% of drivers advocate for enhanced training programs.
