 EDITOR’S NOTE

The new Claimpages website was launched in early June with a design that we think you’ll enjoy. It features more color and graphics, and provides a photograph with almost every news article. Essentially every area of the website was redesigned.

Although missing at launch, we recently restored the Search feature that many of you were looking for (it’s just under the logo), and are continuing to enhance its functionality. You can expect more changes to it over the next few days.

Today, we launched the BETA version of our Roofing Cost Calculators. Using this tool, you can easily calculate roof replacement with one of our typical roof designs or through a "build your own" option. Let us know what you think!

 IN THE NEWS

Flood Insurance: The U.S. Senate unanimously approved (and the President signed) a temporary reauthorization of the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) through Sept. 30. The reauthorization is retroactive to June 1, which was the date the program was halted. The reauthorization was previously approved by the U.S. House of Representatives. For more information, visit www.insurancejournal.com/news/national/2010/07/01/111226.htm.

Hurricane Alex: Catastrophe risk modeling firm AIR Worldwide (AIR) estimates that insurable losses from Hurricane Alex are not expected to exceed $200 million USD. Since insurance penetration in Mexico is relatively low, insured losses are not expected to be significant. This loss estimate covers possible wind and flood damage to onshore properties in Mexico, and is based on the available meteorological parameters and the forecast track for Hurricane Alex since it made landfall in northeast Mexico Wednesday night.

Parts of southern Texas were hit by tropical storm-force winds when Alex came ashore, but heavy rain has had the chief impact. Visit www.air-worldwide.com/NewsAndEventsItem.aspx?id=19414 for more detail.

Staged Accidents in Florida: The number of suspicious auto accidents that were staged or deliberately caused by criminals in Florida has increased dramatically in the past year according to a study by the National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB). While the number of questionable claims for all insurance fraud increased 15 percent from 2008 to 2009 in Florida, the 58 percent jump in the staged/caused accident category shows that criminals are taking advantage of the state’s no-fault auto accident coverage.  DISCUSSION FORUMS

The Claimspages Discussion Forums allow users to discuss claims topics and share pictures. You can freely read the comments of others, but you have to log in to create topics or post comments of your own. Recent topics are displayed below.

TOPIC: Two PIP claims running at the same time
"Hi. FLorida PIP adjusters are needed to answer this one. The scenario is our insured had an auto accident claiming injuries to his neck. Then, about 3 weeks later he has another accident claiming injuries to his lumbar spine. The policy holder is seeing a chiro for the first accident, and now the same chiro is treating for the second accident at the same time."  Read More

TOPIC: AC units lightning strike
"Let me first state that I am an agent, and get on here to learn from the experts, so I appreciate your help in interpreting policies. An insured owns a restaurant and had two AC units struck by lightning. The units are 10 to 15 years old, each has of course a furnace with an A-Coil attached. He has replacement cost. The A/C units will be replaced, and the AC contractor is telling the insured that there have been mandatory..."  Read More

TOPIC: Fraud Claim Law Specialist designation
"Anyone have this designation or heard of it?  I was browsing jobs and came across a SIU position that requires this designation and I had never heard of it.  I went to the website for the American Educational Institute and I have never heard of the company either?  I am interested in getting into a SIU department..."  Read More

TOPIC: Built-in Cabinets
"I’m using MSB IntegraClaim to write an estimate, and I can’t find any way to estimate built-in cabinetry.  I suppose I could estimate based on T & M, but I thought that MSB would have something as basic as built-in cabinets somewhere in their estimating system. Any ideas?"  Read More

TOPIC: Career Opportunities Utilizing Claims Experience?
"I have been in claims 21 years now, mainly multi-line adjusting with a concentration in bodily injury claims of late. I am with a great company that has treated me well. However, I would be curious as to any suggestions for other occupations & fields that I could consider where my extensive claims experience would be an asset."  Read More

TOPIC: Career
"I have recently passed the licensing exam for property, casualty, and auto adjuster in the state of Oklahoma. I would appreciate some guidance on a few topics: Is it wise, or needed, to go ahead and purchase an xactimate yearly subscription and begin training on my own? Is there anyone out there that I could accompany on their adjusting assignments..."  Read More

TOPIC: Homeowner coverage for oil spill damage
"NFIP has agreed to pay for removal of oil related damages when flood waters  containing oil blobs touch the covered property. Will HO-3 policies pay for damage to homes for windborn froth containing oil blobs landing on a home?"  Read More
