A small plane crashed into the Gulf of Mexico just off the coast of Upper Captiva Island. The plane was near a small air strip on the island. The National Transportation Safety Board says the plane is a Piper PA-32. The NTSB tells FOX 4 News that they are expecting one investigator to Southwest Florida and they should arrive on the scene sometime this afternoon. Efforts are currently focused on retreiving the plane from the water. It is not known how many people were onboard the plane, whether any of those people have been rescued and were recovery efforts currently stand.
