A Ligonier Township police officer was killed and his K-9 partner was hurt in an accident on Route 30 in Westmoreland County early Tuesday. The head-on crash happened shortly before 2 a.m. near Idlewild and Soak Zone. Lieutenant Eric Eslary, 40, was on routine patrol, traveling westbound when a van headed the wrong way slammed into his patrol SUV. Many of Eslary’s fellow officers, who are also friends and neighbors, responded to the crash. "I never want to see that again. It was the hardest call I’ve ever gone on," said Ligonier Borough police Chief John Berger.
