Will Bynum, formerly of the Detroit Pistons, has been sentenced to 18 months in prison following his involvement in a widespread NBA insurance fraud scheme. The sentencing occurred in Manhattan federal court where Bynum, aged 41 from Bensenville, Illinois, was convicted last November. He was found guilty of conspiring to submit false medical and dental claims to the NBA Players’ Health and Welfare Benefit Plan.

This case has seen over 20 individuals convicted, many of whom are former NBA players. As part of his sentence, Bynum is also required to forfeit and pay restitution amounting to $182,000 each. The fraudulent activities occurred between 2018 and 2019, involving several ex-players including Terrence Williams and Keyon Dooling, who received sentences of 10 years and 30 months respectively.

Bynum, who had a career average of 8.1 points and 3.3 assists per game over 360 games, was accused of using fake invoices for $200,000 worth of non-existent medical services from a Los Angeles-area chiropractor. His actions during the trial, which included perjury and obstructing justice, were highlighted by the U.S. Attorney, Damian Williams, who warned of severe consequences for those involved in defrauding and obstructing justice.
