The city of Jackson, Mississippi, is poised to receive a significant $10.3 million settlement from Zurich American Insurance Company, resolving a legal dispute that began over four years ago. The lawsuit, filed in 2019, sought damages for the restoration of city buildings damaged by a hailstorm in 2013. Zurich, Jackson’s insurance provider at the time of the storm, had initially made payments including a $2 million advance for emergency repairs. However, the city contended that these payments fell short of the full amount covered by their policy.

The dispute centered around Zurich’s refusal to make additional payments, citing a three-year limitations period within the policy. After a prolonged legal standoff, the two parties reached a settlement in 2023. A district court judge signed an order announcing the resolution of the matter.

Jackson Mayor Chokwe Antar Lumumba addressed the settlement during a recent press conference, highlighting the city’s prolonged efforts to secure a fair agreement for the necessary funds to repair its facilities. City Attorney Catoria Martin noted that the decision to pursue binding arbitration was instrumental in bringing the dispute to a close, emphasizing the city’s underdog status in this legal battle.

When queried about the allocation of the settlement funds, Mayor Lumumba indicated that the money would be used for repairing damaged buildings and addressing other city needs. He refrained from specifying exact plans for the fund’s use, emphasizing the significance of the settlement in meeting the city’s requirements.

This settlement marks the end of a challenging legal journey for Jackson, shedding light on the complexities and intricacies of insurance claims and municipal litigation. It also highlights the city’s commitment to seeking justice and resources necessary for its restoration and development.
