Tesla has announced a recall of all 3,878 Cybertrucks sold due to a defect where the accelerator pedal pad can dislodge and become trapped, causing the pedal to stick in the depressed position. This defect, which has occurred at least twice without leading to injuries or crashes, was caused by an unapproved use of soap as a lubricant on the production line to ease the assembly of pedal pads. This issue, highlighted in a report to the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration, is notable because it requires a physical repair rather than a software update that Tesla often employs.
The Cybertruck, known for its unique angular design and unconventional manufacturing processes, has already been under scrutiny for other issues such as rust and problematic trunks. This recall comes at a challenging time for Tesla, as the company recently reported poor sales and layoffs affecting more than 10% of its global workforce. The company has indicated it is in a transitional phase between growth periods, as Tesla prepares for its upcoming quarterly earnings call with investors.
