Cambridge Mobile Telematics (CMT) has released its latest report analyzing mobile app usage while driving, revealing evolving patterns in distracted driving behavior. Surveying over 1,700 U.S. drivers, CMT found that although fewer drivers admitted to using mobile apps behind the wheel in 2024—64%, down from 73% in 2023—those who do are engaging with a new mix of applications that reflect changing habits and emerging risks.

Surprisingly, the most-used apps while driving are no longer social media staples but utility tools. Google and the Camera app topped the list, with usage rising nearly 50% and over 20% of drivers admitting to using them. Fast food and e-commerce apps like McDonald’s and Amazon also made significant gains, reflecting a trend toward on-the-go convenience. Meanwhile, entertainment-related app use declined steeply: game usage dropped 61%, and social media apps saw a 32% decrease, including an 80% drop in WhatsApp use.

Notable demographic trends highlight that the issue of distracted driving is not limited to younger drivers. Adults aged 30–44 reported the highest rates of app usage while driving, while Gen Z drivers raised new concerns with 30.6% admitting to FaceTiming behind the wheel—68% higher than average. Gender differences were also evident, with men 15% more likely than women to use their phones while driving.

This shift toward ‘productive distraction’ poses new challenges for claims professionals and insurers seeking to understand risk behaviors on the road. As apps like ChatGPT, Safari, and Calendar become more common behind the wheel, the blurred lines between convenience and distraction underscore the ongoing need for telematics solutions and behavioral insights to enhance road safety.
