A woman from Maryland is being sued by the state for allegedly committing insurance fraud exceeding $180,000. She is accused of submitting false claims through her USAA policy, involving damages that reportedly did not occur. The Attorney General of Maryland, Anthony Brown, announced the indictment of the woman on multiple charges, including two counts of felony insurance fraud and one count of theft of property valued at over $25,000.

The fraudulent activities allegedly took place in December 2020 and 2022. The woman claimed that flooding from a broken pipe in her primary suite bathroom damaged various high-value items, leading USAA to pay her $58,373 in 2020. However, a subsequent claim for $124,034 was denied by USAA after discovering discrepancies. These included the lack of reports to her landlord and submission of fake invoices and receipts, along with photos of damage that were not taken in her home.

The woman’s initial court appearance is scheduled for July 26. USAA has been contacted for further comments on the matter.
